FAQS

Why Choose Smilelign? . . .

There are so many cosmetic orthodontic treatments currently on the dental market, so why choose Smilelign? Cosmetic orthodontics is a term used to describe appliances that mainly correct and straighten teeth to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing result. Adults, in particular, find cosmetic orthodontics preferable to fixed, as it allows them to discreetly undergo treatment. Smilelign is a clear brace system ideal for these types of cases.

Why Choose Smilelign clear aligners over other aligners? . . .

Due to advances in digital technology, clear aligner systems have become more popular and dentists now have more choice for their patients. Historically, there has only been one or two systems available, leading to high laboratory costs & long delays from waiting for aligners to arrive from overseas. We manufacturer everything in Sheffield, UK. There are no lengthy delays and we can get the patient's treatment plan back to you as quick as 10 working days from you sending impressions. When designing our system, we listened to some of the top providers of cosmetic orthodontics and developed a system where nearly 50% of cases complete treatment in less than 6 months, and almost all within 12.

What records should I send? . . .

Sending a case for Smilelign assessment and treatment planning couldn't be easier. All we require are impressions. There are no upfront fees or mandatory training courses - we just want to get you, and your patient, on with treatment.

CLINICAL RECORDS . . .

Here are a few things we need: upper and lower silicone (or similar) impressions, bite reg in ICP, a brief outline of patient's main complaint, and treatment objectives. Sometimes we may ask for photos and X-rays. These can be emailed or sent on a disc, we don't mind. If there are any specific details about the case, we ask that you notify us on the Smilelign prescription form. You can download this from our Resources page.

Does Smilelign Offer A Guarantee? . . .

Smilelign is an effective way of straightening teeth and works similar to traditional methods of orthodontics. Success largely depends upon a patient’s compliance with treatment. As such, Smilelign, as with any orthodontic treatment, cannot guarantee that a patient’s teeth will move exactly as predicted. The prescribing orthodontist or dentist is responsible to use their experience and skill to monitor the treatment as it progresses. If necessary, additional treatment with Smilelign, or other forms, may be needed. It is essential that appropriate consent is discussed and obtained from the patient prior to starting treatment.

WHAT ARE PRE-ALIGNERS? . . .

Pre-aligners are unique to Smilelign. We provide them as part of the treatment plan with two purposes in mind: to check the fit of the aligner, and to see if clear aligners are a plausible treatment for the patient to undertake. They are a passive fit designed to replicate an active Smilelign aligner and we recommend the patient wears them for a few days, as they would during treatment, before proceeding.

WHY DO WE USE PRE-ALIGNERS? . . .

Pre-aligners have been a fantastic introduction to the Smilelign system. They enable you to check the fit of the aligners before the active ones are produced, and are also ideal for patients who are not 100% about clear aligner treatment. If your patient is midway through treatment and has swapped to Smilelign, they will also hold the teeth in position and prevent them from regressing to their initial position.

Which silicone is best? . . .

We are happy to accept any silicone material, however, we do recommend Zhermack and Kettenbach materials.

transferring a case to smilelign - FAq's

If you, or your patients, are currently using a different invisible orthodontic aligner provider and wish to move to Smilelign, we can take on your cases smoothly and efficiently.

I'm a dentist, what next? . . .

Although you may be in possession of the other provider's treatment plan for your patient, we will need to complete a Smilelign assessment. This involves taking a 3D scan of new models from fresh impressions. From the digital data, we will be able to give you an accurate cost of providing further aligners to complete treatment. You will receive a report of tooth movements, including any IPR, if required. You will also receive a free copy of our Smilelign Ortho Studio Viewer and we will send a 3D treatment plan to view for each case.

HOW LONG does it take to get a treatment plan? . . .

Our powerful scanners and software allow our team to work quickly on any case. We are providing treatment plans from receipt of impressions in less than 10 working days. Once the treatment plan is ready, it will arrive in your email inbox within minutes. We will also manufacture pre-aligners for your patient, designed for you to check the fit and accuracy of your intial impressions. They also act as retainers for any patients that have previously been wearing aligners and are also great for any patient that is unsure about going ahead with treatment. Once you have fitted the pre-aligners and the treatment plan is approved, we will begin active aligner manufacturing.

How long do the aligners take to be made? . . .

Once you have fitted the pre-aligners and you give us your approval, we will then send the active aligners within 10 working days. We will always give you an accurate date of when you can expect the aligners. We manufacture everything in the UK, so there are no long shipping delays.

Will my patient be starting treatment again from the beginning? . . .

No, we are able to pick up the treatment at any stage. The good news is Smilelign will likely be quicker, requiring less aligners in comparison to other providers. We individually and simultaneously move teeth 0.3mm per stage. For example, in just 20 weeks, we can see 3mm of tooth movement per tooth. This is all that is required in many mild to moderate crowding cases.

SMILELIGN CASE SELECTION

Clear aligners are a very effective orthodontic treatment for many cases. There are, however, cases that can be difficult to treat, being too complex for clear braces. Here are some guidelines to help with case selection. Our Smilelign technicians will be able to advise you further by sending impressions for our 'Scan & Plan' service. We always aim to provide treatment plans that are realistic, predictable, completed within a reasonable time, and do not require any specialist skills from the GDP.
